Brockhurst History

History

A lot, and I mean a lot, is known about this line! I have been able to recover a great deal of genealogical material on this line (which means that it will take a while to upload all the information). There are a few reasons for this wealth of information: (1) the British loved to keep records and (2) this line was wealthy. Because of this, I know of alleged direct ancestors going back to approximately 100 AD.

Because there is such a huge wealth of information, I am still wading through hundreds of individuals that I have not yet been able to add to the Brockhurst family tree, therefore this line is a major work in process. My seconds task is to validate the lineage by finding more sources. This task will also take a long time.

What is known is that the Brockhursts were direct descendents of the Lancasters of Lancashire. These Lancasters were gentry who built and lorded over Kendal Castle in Kendal, Westmoreland, England (Roberts, n.d.).

The Baroness of Kendal, Hawise de Lancaster, was the link to the de Stutevilles of Normandy and to Erneburga FitzBaldrick. Erneburga FitzBaldrick—who I Googled because of her hilarious name—led me to an incredible amount of information on the de Stutevilles, who are a direct line to a number of Counts of Normandy during the 900s, and finally to Helwise of Fruili, daughter of Gisela Roman, granddaughter of Louis I (The Pious), great-granddaughter to Charlemagne (a.k.a. Charles the Great, Carolingian King of the Franks and Holy Roman Emperor) (Skaggs, n.d.). And this my friends, is why genealogy rocks!!!

As I mentioned above, I am in the process of validating all of this information, but my source appears to have used a lot of reputable citations and did a great deal of citing.
